Cultural insensitivity is not always done purposely or maliciously. In “Practices against Culture that "Work" in Nunavut Schools: Problematizing Two Common Practices.” Berger and Epps (2007) explore the negative implications of using Western pedagogical approaches that do not reflect Native culture in First Nations communities. In the article, Berger and Epps describe the pedagogical practices of some non-native teachers working in Native schools. The article lists several approaches that the teachers took, which were in direct conflict with the traditional Native learning style. Berger and Epps assert that although certain pedagogical approaches are academically successful, teachers should not use them because they work against the culture of the community (2007, p. 9). While the article deals with non-Native teachers in Inuit schools, I believe that teachers dealing with students from diverse cultures can reflect on how cultural insensitivity can unintentionally seep into our work due to our socialization and education. Berger and Epps stress the need to engage the community in meaningful consultation to determine if “effective teaching practices” are culturally sensitive (2006, p. 11).
Part 2: Controversy
Linking culture and learning styles and making generalizations about groups of people can be controversial. While different cultural groups may have different learning styles, it is important to remember that every individual is different and that their particular learning style will be affected by a range of factors.
Another reason that the relationship between culture and learning styles is controversial is because it forces us to reflect on our own views concerning the role of education and integration.
